Taking The Oath

Lord, we can be your witnesses.
We have seen the altar linen purity
At morning Communion embrace the stained glass blue
In readiness for the memorial of your life.

Lord, we can be your witnesses.
We have heard the church clock in the winter fields
Telling the half hours towards a glad new year
With blessings in the family, gifts from you.

Lord, we can be your witnesses.
The harvest smell of apples by the font
Reminding of the early years with you
Sometimes unheeding, sometimes overwhelmed.

Lord, we can be your witnesses.
The taste of quenching candle smoke and spare wine
Consumed before the congregation leaves
In reverence trying to recall the Host.

Lord, we must be your witnesses.
The Christmas holly prickles warn of care
To take when reaching others in your name
Not to recoil when witness is rebuffed.

Lord, do you need our witness?
Our senses speak to us of things beyond
You call us all to worship at your birth
And we will take the oath and speak for you.
