Beyond The Decorations

Beyond the decorations
Sits an altar, empty, waiting
For the coming of the Host, the Son of God
In bread and wine.
As we approach in expectation
Of the memorial’s fulfilment
Then God’s Spirit brings His presence
To our hearts, to yours and mine.

Beyond the decorations
Stands a chair, still empty, waiting
For the coming of the Judge, the King
Our Shepherd, Friend divine
So we’ll watch in expectation
Salvation history’s fulfilment
When God’s angels sing His glory
In our hearts, in yours and mine.

Beyond the decorations
Hangs a wreath of holly, waiting
Like a crown of thorns, the green and red
The torture of the Vine
But we see the coming Advent
As the risen Christ’s fulfilment
Of the promise of the Gospel
To our hearts at the end of time.
